The federal government announced this week that they would be reducing the Medicare-rebated psychology sessions from 20 to 10 per year. The session rebate was first extended during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.Counseling and therapy for couple and family. Adoption, psychology or psychotherapy concept. Session with psychiatrist or psychologist. Husband and wife with marriage counselor. Man, woman and doctor.

"It's hard to even gauge if you have found the right psychologist for you in 10 sessions," Kaitlyn said. It's a similar story for Annie* who is moving from full-time work to completing her final year of university next year.
"It has reduced the mental stress on finding the money to pay for these sessions. It has also allowed me to prioritise my mental health," Annie said.

As a psychologist, I have already run through my case load highlighting those clients who have NOT accessed hospital support due to the extra sessions and those who likely will AGAIN now due to the slash back to ten sessions. So unnecessary. So shortsighted.
