COP15 on biodiversity has brought thousands of delegates to Montreal to address critical issues our planet is facing. Related to food systems, delegates are discussing agroecology, food-systems intensification and consideration of fisheries in food security.
The motion itself appears to be largely inspired by the EAT-Lancet “planetary health diet,” half of which is comprised of fruit and vegetables, with whole grains, unsaturated plant oils and plant-sourced proteins also playing a large role. Animal protein, including dairy and eggs, would represent about 10 per cent of the diet, that’s it.
Extreme environmental groups have claimed now that lobby groups representing seed, chemical and fertilizer giants have no place at COP15. They are wondering why some were accredited in the first place. Input companies are also environmentalists, and so are farmers, with a different view on agriculture, obviously. This needs to be echoed at COP15.
Animal agriculture is the leading cause of: green house gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution worldwide. Some animal products are same level of cancer causing as cigarettes (W.H.O). Why would a govt continue to subsidize an industry that is killing us all.
Comment: opinion piece completely ignores the reality that animal protein production is a large part of the imminent ecological collapse.
boomers hate vegetables
I have a family member who is seriously allergic to many fruits and vegetables. She has to carry an epi-pen and has had a few trips to the hospital. She relies on meat. She won't be giving it up any time soon.
It would be laughable that COP15 is focussing on “standardized animal diets” instead of the actual regulation & enforcement of natural gas wells if our grandchildrens’ futures weren’t at stake.
A very good portion of this seems to just come down to “Ah but this would be personally inconvenient for me, and the people cutting my cheques would maybe lose some money”. It’s pretty telling there’s nothing about climate or ecological collapse in the piece
