All ambulance trusts in England have declared “extreme pressure” alerts and overwhelmed A&Es are facing 16-hour delays in the latest signs that the winter NHS crisis is intensifying.an outbreak of the Strep A virus

Pat Cullen, general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, said the NHS had been in crisis for “many, many years” due to underfunding by the government, and would be in an even worse state without nurses working unpaid hours. The Labour MP added: “They know NHS staff work wonders every day, but the system is in crisis, and staff are overstretched and burned out. Instead of negotiating with nurses to avert strikes and implementing a proper workforce strategy, the Government is sitting on its hands and failing patients.”

“I had my head in my hands and was looking at the floor and there was blood that had been spilled and then a trolley had been pulled through it,” said Mrs Gilroy. “My husband said it looked like a field hospital in a war zone. “I thought, ‘Oh my God. There must be people dying in there, without a doubt.’ It must be so stressful for the staff.”

Meanwhile, all 10 ambulance trusts in England have moved into Resource Escalation Action Plan Level 4, the highest level of alert, due to the number of 999 calls being received.
