Among men, SACM decreased by 8.4%, from 26 437 deaths in 2014 to 2016 to 24 228 deaths in 2017 to 2019; the SAF overall decreased significantly from 49.9% to 47.6% between the same periods. By site, the SAF declined significantly only for pancreatic cancer in men. Among women, SACM decreased significantly by 13.
Among the 12 types of cancer, the top 5 SACM counts over the entire time period were for cancers of the lung , bladder , oral cavity and pharynx , liver , and colon and rectum . Among men, SACM was highest for cancers of the lung , bladder , liver , oral cavity and pharynx , and esophagus . For women, SACM was highest for cancers of the lung , bladder , pancreas , colon and rectum , and oral cavity and pharynx . For each cancer site, except for pancreatic cancer, men had greater SACM.
Our analyses of changes over the 2 time periods suggest promising trends in tobacco behavior among California patients with newly diagnosed cancer, which could be related to California’s ongoing tobacco control efforts.
