Inter-tribal tensions, the rebel menace, and hate speech in the eastern and western parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are the major threats to a credible, free and fair general election next year. | CdeLENIN

Ethnic and tribal tensions in the DRC could lead to another genocide.

This was the view of United Nations special advisor on the prevention of genocide Alice Wairimu Nderitu at the end of her week-long fact-finding mission to the DRC. "The current violence is a warning sign of societal fragility and proof of the enduring presence of the conditions that allowed large-scale hatred and violence to erupt into a genocide in the past," said Nderitu.

According to Nderitu, the DRC government's failure to stop the rebels is the main reason why instability is on the rise. She said for the situation to be resolved, there was a need to learn from past experiences.
