– Members of City Council are pushing to ban horse-drawn carriages in downtown San Antonio, citing “inhumane” treatment of the animals and a negative environmental impact due to increased traffic congestion.
The CCR calls for the phasing out of horse-drawn carriages and would prohibit the use of horses with carriage rides. “For years, residents have called out the use of horses in horse drawn carriages as an inhumane, cruel means of travel in San Antonio,” the proposal states, adding that traffic noise, pollution, extreme weather, labor and standing on hard surfaces are “detrimental” to their health.
No, y’all misunderstand. The council is voting to move them from downtown to just run from the pearl to the end of the St Mary’s Strip. Some will help with getting patrons from there cars in Tobin Hill. Pedicabs will replace horses downtown. TheMontereySA CleanGuayabera
The horses look healthy and tourists as well as locals enjoy the beautiful carriages. I don’t even mind when I get stuck behind one. They are apart of the downtown flavor n would be a shame to see them go. Please let us know which Council members want them to go.. ivote
These are work horses and they’re well maintained. The carriages aren’t accessing public lanes of traffic for their tours. If there is any traffic nuisance that should be addressed it’s the homeless situation.

If bus lanes are made for buses then it can be applied for horse carriages.. The carriages are part of what brings a beauty to this city. The useless mayor needs to do a better job with the homeless, the crimes being committed by drunks, t failure of police not enforcing laws
About time i always felt sorry for these horses they should be in small beach towns doing this instead not in a big city.

For years horses were the only transportation..this is Texas a horse State..just make sure they are treated well
Just for the simple reason of traffic congestion. We have a couple of hospitals that receive patients by ambulance. And emergency response in general.

Could City Council please ban homelessness in downtown? I'm far more concerned about the urine, feces, vomit and open drug use than horses. The homelessness is inhumane and has a negative environmental impact.
The idea of a nostalgic horse drawn carriage ride is appealing if the horses are treated well and driver is knowledgeable of San Antonio's historic sites along the route. Based on my last ride a few years back - neither was true. It may be time to sunset this venue.
