An aide in Cunningham’s office Tuesday declined to comment on her health or the prospects of her completing the current term.

State Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham, seen here in April 2022, is expected to retire following health issues, according to a news report. State Sen. Sandra Cunningham, who’s held office for 15 years, likely will not run for re-election because of health issues, a source told The Jersey Journal Tuesday.

The 72-year-old has been having unspecified health issues and it’s “fairly certain” she won’t compete for another term in the heavily Democratic 31st District, said the source, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak on Cunningham’s behalf.
