Terry Fox, pictured running on his tour, had one leg amputated due to cancer. He tried to run across Canada, but after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres, he had to end his run. His efforts cost him his life, but his worldwide legacy lives on. He was 22 when he died. The annual Terry Fox Run, first started in 1981.
