Opinion: The cost of sunscreen is exorbitant given it is an essential item for Australians. Why not provide it free for citizens of the nation that carries world’s highest skin cancer burden? | Narayan Khanal

, melanoma is the third most common cancer in the nation. It kills about 1700 people each year. Melanoma is particularly ubiquitous as it affects people of all ages and is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australians aged 20 to 39. Almost 17,000 Australians are diagnosed with melanoma every year.

Australia carries the highest skin cancer burden in the world, and yet there has not been any new national investment in preventing skin cancer for well over a decade. The rewards of government investment in public health measures, however, are well established. Limiting our time in the sun, wearing sun-protective clothing, seeking shade and having regular skin checks with doctors are all important measures to protect against skin cancer. Equally, sunscreen and education are critical.

Maybe Peter Costello finally came up with an idea but too late to save Morrison.

Australia needs to grow more trees . Few extra ordinary nature lover in India has successfully stopped desertification of vast lands by planting trees daily for decades n turned it into a thriving forests.

Don't you think having championed the Morrison 'personal responsibility' brigade that it's up to us and we should be responsible for protecting ourselves! SMH now championing the 'nanny state' option!

Well I see parents arriving with their kids 10am as my family leaves and staying during max UV ray time of day. Water and sand both reflect and intensify those rays. They don’t care. It’s not that block outs too expensive. Fun, easy parenting important than care!!

I just don't want to pay more tax so no thank you

Housing is an essential item for anyone - why not provide it for free for citizens?

Sigh! Nothing is ever free. It has to be paid for somehow. Much rather see the money spent on supporting the homeless, improving the health system, increasing job seeker.

Free = tax!!

or perhaps people can work and pay for it themselves..,

what's exorbitant is the cost of housing (or the government)

The majority of ‘commercial’ sunscreens are full of toxic ingredients. EWG lists them. Using hemp (SPF6+) and zinc oxide (20-25%) would be ideal. Two natural ingredients that are non-toxic when used as directed.

Nothing, absolutely nothing is free.

Nothing is free. Free for one means taxes for others.

Same with energy, food, clothing, etc!!!! essentials

That's actually a very cool idea.

There are two sunscreen chemicals in particular that the US EWG have noted due to their high toxicity concerns. The chemicals are oxybenzone and octinoxate. Both of these are registered for use as chemical ingredients for sunscreens with the Australian TGA

More *free stuff *everyone else pays

Because people will abuse it. The things a bunch of schoolies kids will do with unlimited free sunscreen. The pranks, oh think of the pranks.

Food is more essential, Idt

Start up a GoFundMe so all those who want to spend other people's money can first set an example by generously providing free sunscreen for all persons of pallor.

Because nothing is free. Taxpayer pay for everything that is 'free'.

Water is not free, food is certainly not, and neither is getting to work and back (tolls/petrol/bus/train). I'm not completely against a thought experiment where all essentials are provided but tax would be really high.

Not a bad idea

Why not provide it free for citizens of the nation that carries world’s highest skin cancer burden? slip, slop, slapdash journalism. You might want to mention the rise in the number of people with vitamin D deficiency because they're avoiding the sun at all costs. Water is critical to maintain life - why isn’t it free? Nothing is free. You just want someone else to pay for it (either someone wealthier or a future taxpayer)?
