An initiative by The National Institutes of Health aims to increase our understanding of a common but less well-studied form of dementia called Lewy body dementia.

Leverenz said samples are catalogued together with information about patients and their symptoms, time since diagnosis and any other pertinent information. Any researcher anywhere can search the database and request various samples for the purposes of clinical research studies - giving them access to many more research subjects than one lab could manage to collect alone.

That’s important because once the dementia symptoms have already started, it’s unlikely that they can be reversed – and it’s important to catch the disease before any permanent damage has been done. Also, while a patient with Alzheimer’s might talk about things in the present that didn’t really happen, say a recent visit with a parent who has actually been dead for 20 years, patients with Lewy body disease frequently report actual visual hallucinations.

Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of Lewy body dementia said Leverenz are the Parkinson’s-like symptoms that often precede it: the slowing of movement, stooped posture, shuffled walk, and of course, the tremors.
