Bacteria that cause common urinary-tract infections are increasingly developing resistance to existing antibiotics. Soon, a new treatment option could be available.

GSK PLC said its experimental treatment for uncomplicated urinary-tract infections was effective in two large clinical trials, paving the way for what could be the first new oral antibiotic for the common ailment in more than two decades.

Around half of all women have suffered a urinary-tract infection, or UTI, at least once, and recurrence is common, according to studies. UTIs are typically treated with antibiotics, but some bacteria have developed resistance to existing drugs, creating a need for new treatment options.

Over prescribing of antibiotics for UTI is the problem. If MDs and nurses continue to give antibiotics to patients who have no symptoms but urine culture positive, will not only breed resistance to the new antibiotic but to others in the same class as well

More symptoms of factory farming and animal ag.

This is a result of generations of over prescribing antibiotics which has lead to many elderly & immuno-compromised ppl dying from sepsis originating from a UTI. There are other tx’s that cure minor to moderate UTI’s. Antibiotics should always be the last resort.

How lovely to hear! Cranberry juice, rest and diet won’t do much for pharma bottom line, but some expensive, short term active, killer biotic would definitely do. Cannot wait.
