Australia’s biggest health insurer now says it’s received a ransom demand, after earlier claims no customer data had been accessed or deleted from its servers.

Australia’s biggest health insurer Medibank says a group is demanding a ransom for sensitive health and credit card information that hackers say they took from the company’s servers during aseen the ransom note

Medibank chief executive David Koczkar has apologised to the company’s 3.8 million members just days after briefing analysts and stating that no customer information had been compromised or deleted from Medibank’s servers.Advertisement But the health insurer, which had provided very little detail regarding the nature of the attack until Wednesday when it said there was nothing to suggest any data was accessed, again attempted to play down the situation by suggesting the hackers’ claims may be untrue.

On Wednesday, Mr Koczkar said the incident was detected on the servers hosting its budget ahm-branded health insurance and for international students, prompting Medibank to quickly shut down customer services to protect systems.Mr Koczkar said repeatedly that no customer information had been deleted and that systems were not encrypted during the attack, which would typically happen during a ransomware attack.
