Restaurants across Canada are saying their prices will be upped by more than seven per cent by the end of the year — in a bid to keep profits sustainable and offset the rising cost of food.

The war in Ukraine and high energy costs are contributing to the high cost of food for restaurant owners, according to a new report.has rounded up the consumer and health news you need.

"You are talking [substantial] increases in our food costs. When you look at dairy, it's up nearly 20 per cent. Beef, 16 per cent. Cooking oil, 20 per cent. There's been a lot of inflationary pressure … and our natural gas costs have gone up by about 22 per cent as well." Pleterski owned 11 vehicles, was leasing four other luxury cars, flew on private jets and was paying $45,000 a month to rent a lakefront mansion in Burlington, Ont.

The annual inflation rate came in at seven per cent in August, down from the four-decade high we saw in June. With another interest rate hike expected, some Canadians already pinched by higher prices could be further squeezed by increased debt payments. While Canada's inflation rate cooled to seven per cent in August, it doesn't mean the prices of goods are coming down any time soon.Dr.

I thought the price of meat must of dropped in the grocery store just by the amount of road kill left on the roads. Come to find out, Its because the hunters are chasing the small game onto the roads. Time to stock up on Flattened Possum Nuts.

Canadians won't eat out.

Defund the Left wing CBC

And they will continue to go up in the new year and so on. Going to a restaurant will soon be a once a year treat like it used to be and soon there will be 5 cactus clubs instead of 30, 10 Starbucks instead of 50.

This nigga took my idea…all you can eat. That just tells me I’m smart af😉

unfortunately the restaurants are going to put them selves out of business... I for one went from dinning out 4x a month to 2 .

Won't effect me, I stopped dining out long ago, cost too much now

Funny thing... I do NEED restaurants... I know how to cook, probably healthier and less salt than any restaurant. idgaf

Well I guess eating out is not on the menu anymore! A shame that Canada is now not a great place to live and raise a family. poor wages overtaxed

VeraPar88750449 Yeah profits sustainable. So boycott restaurants. Cook meals at home.

I would agree with other comments. I’m eating out less already. It’s just too much. A weekday restaurant meal without alcohol can run you $45 for one person. It’s too high.

no problem raise it what you want restaurant dine in what,s that ? have not been into a sit in restaurant in decades

Just means I will eat out less

Thanks libs!

Yes this is fantastic news

Seeya tips hahaha

It’s Justinflation JustinTrudeauMustGo

We stopped dining out a year ago. We won't be dining out again anytime soon. Screw their profits! And the Govt needs to get their shit together before things can no longer be fixed.

Not dining out will cause hardship to restaurants

Inflation caused by Trudeau

And they want 30% tops

If pay for servers is inadequate, no one makes a profit. I won't pay the extra expense for eating out no matter how high owners raise prices.

Will? Lol..🤣

More carbontax

Yes they did and we are on a fixed income and haven't been to one yet! I hear they want us to tip 20+% too! Not going to happen here!

So don't dine out. Duh

Has it ever been cheap?

NO MORE TIPPING.

I’d rather give myself the crappy service at home for 15/20%

Sunnyways TrudeauMustGo

Same candy, same price, difference size at Dollarama - these jelly beans have gone from 190G to 175G, 8.5% shrinkflation. Top package is new, bottom package is the old one.

All the more reason to cook at home.

Ontario’s problem is that most restaurant owners wants to be a millionaire over night and they serve average food. This has made the restaurant scene very bland and expensive.

Junk Fast Food service is getting to be a good option.

JustInflation

That’s how inflation works.

There is a tipping point, and I think a lot of restaurants are getting close. People will stop going if prices climb much more.

Sounds like we could all use a tax break during this difficult time

JustInflation

Maybe more carbon tax, higher payroll deductions and the inflation should set us for more success.

For those who dine out, generally speaking seven percent isn’t going to affect anything. If you are eating at a restaurant with an executive chef then it is money well spent. If you are eating elsewhere then you get what you pay for.

Is that in addition to the prices they already jacked up or are you 6 months late reporting this? DefundCBC MediaLies Gaslighting

No more tipping and cutting back going to a restaurant. The prices are outrageous. Not worth it

MahsaAmini

You voted liberal. Now your paying the price. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 Problem is so is everyone else

So put ur own nail in ur coffin

I don’t miss dining out… or the food borne illness in most cases! 💵💰 saved 🤷🏻‍♀️

No thanks ! 7 % increase plus a waiter looking for a 30 + % tip. I don't think so 🤨

No more restaurants for me..

More like the rising greed of grocery chains. Which in turn fuels inflation. Speaking of fuels, oil is below $80 a barrel. But what do we see here but more rising greed and huge profits.

All about keeping those profits. Wouldn’t want them to go a year or 2 even.

Eating out shouldn't be a luxury. If gutless CBC would invest in comparing prices in EU & Britain to Canadian restaurants, the results would be shocking. Monopolies on supply chains are a good starting point to blame. Don't buy into this labour shortage 🐂💩

Looks like I’ll be eating out 7% less.

Just means more of my wife's superb cooking.

It’s about time for all of us band together and stop paying our taxes

Remember the days when you could stretch a buck? Today, restaurants serve lower quality, smaller portion, meals with much higher pricing. Plus the auto 30% Tip. I am not against a business making a profit. Just saying that going out is long gone for me.

Why just restaurants? Think this applies to everything. No?

Restaurants should use all-in pricing like the rest of the economy & treat labour like any other overhead. Post prices online, ads, at door, in menu and let the market prevail. All-in ensures proper base salary, tax reporting, access to CPP, EI, WSIB, attraction/retention, etc

Quality and serving sizes have been bad enough over the past couple years. This will just finish off a lot of restaurants.

Between the rising prices, smaller portions, lower quality and obviously higher tips due in part to the machine programming and the aforementioned price hikes, a lot of restaurants will go under. It is a shame but business is business and the previous models were unsustainable.

I’ll just eat out less.

Then they can damn well keep it. The prices are too high as it is.

Its part of the balancing?

That's fine, more people will eat home. You lose.

Funny, a story about tips the other day must have gotten them scared! They need to keep their profits up. You can't manage a business properly, close. Stop pushing things onto the customers.

Not surprised. The labour shortage is forcing restaurants to pay employees considerably more for what is grueling work. Add on food costs & a lot of eateries aren't going to make it.

G7 economics, this is WEF. Don't forget your 7th jab peasants Klaus speed.

So just don't go out to restaurants. Problem solved.

Competitive pressure should keep restaurant prices relatively under control.

Or you could buy out the owner, (eliminating shareholders too) start a cooperative business. Split the profits among the employees.

Eating out should be a treat not the norm , I do not eat out now , have cut that from the budget , same with the movies , almost never go now

Inflation is theft and Canadian inflation is made in Ottawa. TrudeauMustGo TrudeauMustGoNow

I guess I'll have to make more meals at home then.

Was just in Greece. Why is it ~50% less to eat out in Greece? Yes, half or better. Beer & Wine so affordable. And no one asks for a tip! And everyone I met seemed content to help. Bottled water was not 'inflated' even at the busy tourist areas with few shops. 🇬🇷 👍🏾

“IN A BID TO KEEP PROFITS SUSTAINABLE” That’s the REAL story here. PROFITS. Always PROFITS!!

Maybe restaurants need to recoup the losses from the F*ing covid lockdowns. PLUS increased min wage, and food/liquor costs ect Profit margins for restaurants isn't very high. Delivery services like Skip take 30%. So prices go up to compensate. Eating out is a luxury now.

To keep profits sustainable. 😂 'The restaurant will no longer serve meat or seafood when it reopens, Daniel Humm, the chef, said. “THE CURRENT FOOD SYSTEM IS SIMPLY NOT SUSTAINABLE, IN SO MANY WAYS,” he said.

Blackface really ruined this place in short order

Restaurants are now a luxury anyway

Eating in

Sunny Ways!

Hoping for a rock from space to burn the place down!!! Humans have failed

Thank you world leaders.

As if prices have not already been adjusted for food inflation?

TrudeauMustGo Agenda2030 JustSayNo

Sorry they are pricing themselves out of business.

Eat at home until prices come down It’s a lot cheaper

Building back better. Just get the government to print more money to fight the inflation lol . Just blame Russia or the world for it.

Haven't been to a restaurant since I was told my unvxxd arse and filthy cash weren't welcome and don't plan on supporting them going forward. Enjoy the insolvency

As will the customers decline

Who would've thought flooding the system will too much money would lead to inflation 🙄 Canada's greatest enemy is its own government.

People will entertain and eat at home.

How about we start investigating the entire food supply chain Someone could be price fixing down the line 🤔

They can pay a fair wage while they’re at it , and get rid of tipping options on their payment terminal

Prices up 7%, portion size down 12%, quality degraded 18% Remember what decisions led us to this point and who made them.

Peter Oliver, known for co-founding luxurious Toronto restaurants, dead at 74 | CBC NewsOliver & Bonacini Hospitality says Canadian restaurateur Peter Oliver has died at 74, after a battle with cancer. Truly a remarkable and renouned restauranteur. I remember his little restaurant, east side of Yonge north of Eglinton. I worked at Yonge/St. Clair, living on Oriole Pkwy. Had my first Eggs Benny (and 2nd, 3rd, etc.) at Oliver's in the early 80's. Loved Auberge, Canoe. My condolences to Andrew and Marc, whom I knew as a teen from campponacka.
