Oaks, maples and chestnuts found in cities are among over 1,000 tree species that are flagged at risk.

Climate change threatens the health and survival of urban trees, with more than half of species already feeling the heat, according to a new study.

City-dwelling oaks, maples, poplars, elms, pines and chestnuts are among more than 1,000 tree species flagged at risk due to climate change. Scientists want better protection of existing trees and for drought-resistant varieties to be planted. Many trees in urban areas are already stressed because of climate change, and as it gets warmer and drier, the number of species at potential risk will increase, said Manuel Esperon-Rodriguez of Western Sydney University in Penrith, Australia.

City and street trees can improve physical and mental health, are important in social integration and can mitigate the effects of temperature rises - something that hit home during the pandemic, he said. "All these benefits are mainly provided by big mature trees so we need to make sure that what we are planting today will get to that stage where they can provide all those benefits for future generations," he told BBC News.

if there's one thing cities need much more of, it's urban trees and greenspace, imo

Lack of credible news and public confidence threatens BBC

Nature survives, people don't!

More utter Rubbish from the BBC

In Quillota (Chile) the Municipality took an international commitment against climatechange, planting 1 tree for each of the 100.000 inhabitants of the city. With the support of entrepreneurs, institutes and citizens, we have planted 60.000 and the goal will be reach on 2023.

Rubbish 🤣🤣

When I lived in London, it was the council that went and chopped them all down not climate change

No it doesn't

Is that the climate change where we supposedly had a heatwave, wildfires and drought which I have yet to see, apart from 2 warm days in July! I think the tress are pretty safe!

Brilliant stuff, we can all thank the BBC for doing so much to put proven liars on the air and guaranteeing our chances of mid-term survival are basically zero.

Biggest misinformation ever. It's not climate change the trees are suffering from. It man keep cutting them down that's a straight up fact.

Nope BS 5g transmitters are causing urban trees to die. Nice try bbc

Ok but the council killed ours, they chopped them down.

Those are pruned trees not dead trees like you want people to think.

“Climate change” 😂 HONK HONK 🤡🤡

Excellent coverage over the last few days. But oh no not back to this again

Urbanisation is the primary cause of climate change
