With a few creative tax solutions, Canada could afford to increase its health care spending

Rhys Kesselman is professor emeritus at the School of Public Policy at Simon Fraser University. His research focuses on taxation, social policy and public finance.

A declining system poses risks not only to the health of Canadians, but to the survival of universal public health care itself, as more of the electorate may be persuaded toward a privatized system by this lack of timely access. One might ask why the provinces don’t simply raise their own revenues to cover the growing gap between needs and resources. The answer is that provinces are concerned about tax competitiveness and public reaction, which has deterred them from raising their taxes. Given its greater fiscal powers and the national interest in Canada’s paramount social program, the federal government is best suited to raise the funds.

just hire one journalist... just one. *it's like the editors don't realize... we can read... think... have a memory longer than 24 hours. but hey - makes our job easier... lol 😎🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😎

Why not divert all of the inequitable corporate tax breaks/incentives to the public health care system? Also, ban all private hospitals from 🇨🇦!

The government already has piles of our money. It's priorities are in the wrong place, money is wasted on bureaucrats, and no one is accountable.

Creative?… or simply common sense… ie… trim down, way down… the often repetitive, useless top heavy management in all of our provincial health care services. The money can be much better utilized on our frontline workers and services.

Of course it can afford to spend more but can you trust the premiers to spend the increase on healthcare. ford spent a billion dollars on license sticker vote buying gifts, could of used for healthcare. Healthcare is very important take it away from provinces

Hire more front line staff, less administrators/managers.

It is more than clear that the money spent in the health care system in Canada is not well managed. Canada spent more in health than any other country with similar health system and offer much less and less effectively!

Start by not 'losing' the funds
