An armored truck guard died Thursday, a day after he was shot during a robbery at Kaiser Medical Center, authorities said.

“San Leandro PD and [c]ity staff offer our condolences to the family,” Sgt. Matt Barajas said in a statement. “The family of the victim has asked for privacy concerning this matter, which we will honor.”

The shooting and robbery happened about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday on the grounds of the hospital, which is at 2500 Merced Street. The guard, identified only as a 60-year-old man who had worked for the company for nearly 40 years, had just made a pickup of a messenger bag with currency inside and was on his way back to his truck, parked on the complex’s east side with another guard waiting behind the wheel.

Suddenly, an unidentified suspect shot and wounded him in his upper torso. Police said they believe the suspect then grabbed the bag and fled to a waiting getaway vehicle. Police are still trying to determine how much money was taken.Anyone with information is asked to call police at 510-577-2740.
