Throughout the sweltering Texas summer, coach Vickie Johnson talked about how the Wings were still becoming a good team. But despite having the best season...

“[We were] pretty close, but not quite because we didn’t have a full roster,” Johnson said after the regular season finale.

taking over a month to find her form with her new team and Ogunbowale missing the final stretch of the season, Dallas never got to really evaluate the full team it built — and how all the parts work with each other. But the injuries did give some players an opportunity to step up and, especially during the last few weeks of the season, Johnson had to be impressed with their performances.

“We reached our goals this year to get to the playoffs and also win a game,” Mabrey said. “It wasn’t exactly what we wanted to do. But perspective is everything.” But that changed when she took over Ogunbowale’s spot in the starting lineup. She did everything with more confidence, best exemplified by two standout drives and finishes in the first quarter of Game 3 versus Connecticut — neither of which she would have even tried one month ago.

The offense could get stagnant and the ball stickier than chewed gum. Boxing out was a problem in the playoffs against Connecticut. But this offseason stands to be the biggest one of the Wings rebuild. The 2022 Wings were far from perfect but they did prove they have a core that has proved it can beat the league’s best teams.

Health issues were a small factor. VJ doesn’t know how to use the talent she has and makes poor coaching decisions.
