When it comes to Canada’s health care system, it’s time to start shattering some sacred cows

has said about the health care crisis in this country, perhaps the most perceptive – and obvious – is that what we’re doing is failing Canadians.

That discussion has been almost impossible to have because it inevitably raises the spectre of the biggest health care bogeyman of them all: privatization. And that debate always seems to circle back to the United States. Privatization, its critics say, would lead to the gross inequities that we see in the health care system down south.

Denmark has optional private health care, although the uptake is small. The same is true in Austria, although if you go to a private health care provider, you can get up to 80 per cent of your costs covered by the national plan. In Japan, most people have private insurance, but the government pays about 70 per cent of a person’s medical costs.

brownktb Would love to chat about the future of pharmacy in Canada. Let's chat!

i think the word is slaughter, slaughtering.

'Canada ranked 23rd. When you start looking into what the top-ranked countries are doing, one thing catches your attention: In almost every case, the private sector has at least some role to play.' Good point that needs to be looked into further.

i heard the globe & mail offices smell like the geriatric ward of an underfunded hospitals

Reluctantly, I concede there is an important point here. Our Canadian healthcare system is already a blended one. I pay for dentistry, optometry, medicines. We need to work, with facts. We also need to focus on what we want. Health for every Canadian.

whatever they're paying you to post this shit, social media manager for the globe and mail, was it worth their efforts to mortgage your future? your family's?

Exactly. Some sacred cows? This country needs a whole new system, we r collectively living with our head in the sand. Time to wake up and face reality.

No to privatization. Absolutely not.

nachkari Government can raise tens of billions in new revenue annually by removing the capital gains tax exemption on principal residence and introducing a 1% annual home ownership tax on value of home.

Take a hint from your own playbook, and go back to America. Don't forget to take this BS out with you. Canadians don't want your murderous privatization, and will be more than happy to show you how much we hate it, the second you try to pull it. The Globe & Fail, more like.

How about finding the missing $5B that fordnation has hidden from the OntarioAuditor? Where is it? Here?

Every day brings evidence of mismanagement in health care. Meanwhile, premiers want another $28 billion for health care, no questions asked, on top of the $45 billion they already get yearly. What’s wrong with this picture? Accountability.

why does this 'sacred cow' metaphor keep cropping up with respect to universal healthcare? in which focus group did they cook up this racist framing as a way to advocate privatization? as though privatization is some kind of realist solution to an underfunded system

The prov'l PC gov'ts butchered health care systems in the years prior to the pandemic, and COVID pushed them over the edge. If you can provide private health care for less than public and still make $$, corners are being cut. If it costs more, so that $$ can be made, why?

Does anybody read this rag anymore?

Having friends connected to head nurses and doctors, they even brag about their priority care to me. The horror stories of people dying without treatment, are never from this group, of course. We have an Animal Farm system today.

Tax the Rich Like they were 60 years ago Then we'll have an awesome healthcare system again

fuck this nonsense

Absolute monstrous and soulless take.

Opinion:

Go away

Soulless, deceitful shill.

garymasonglobe Alright Gary, say more things in Canada’s medicare system are privatized. Then any savings go back into it as legislated by law. Not where some politician thinks it should go. Not on provincial debt or wherever. Back into medicare. cdnpoli healthcare

No. Don't cheerlead privitization. It steals tax dollars for a middleman. Just don't.

Sacred Cows, as in over inflated salaries of far too much senior admin and CEOs in hospitals and health networks across this country!

Give the G&M credit, at least they're honest about pushing for a US style health care system 👍
