” : The report describes the local need for more behavioral health workers, including more drug counselors. San Diego desperately needs more drug counselors because there continues to be record drug overdoses and deaths throughout the county., allegedly written to strengthen substance use disorder counselor training, will in fact hamper all efforts to recruit and retain qualified drug counselors.

Authored by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, AB 2473 mandates that all core competency requirements be completed in six months, a mere 183 calendar days; an arbitrary and ridiculous requirement that must be removed. There is no other health care training program with such a narrow window to complete educational requirements and California has had state-certified drug counselors with continuing education requirements since 2010.Linda Bridgeman Smith
