It started out with singing around a campfire and now this alt-country band will take its messages about river health and Indigenous issues to thousands of people at the Mundi Mundi Bash.

The Waterbag Band was formed after singing around a campfire one night in Mutawindji — more than 100 kilometres from Broken Hill.

Malyannuppa, Baaka and Wiimpatja man Leroy Johnson is the lead singer and said it felt "unreal" to have his band play at a festival.Leroy Johnson advocates for Barkindji people's issues in his music. Mr Johnson found inspiration by listening to Indigenous artists like Archie Roach, The Warumpi Band and Roger Knox while growing up.

"It has been such a beautiful learning experience for me and one that I'm super grateful for," he said.Leroy Johnson and The Waterbag Band have performed small gigs across far west NSW. "He's never really had this opportunity to record his stories and tell his stories, and they're from a lifetime of his perspective and others," she said.
