Fianna Fáil's Barry Cowen said Robert Watt’s €294,920 salary would be “justified were he to take charge of both” the HSE and the Department of Health.

Department of Health secretary general Robert Watt: His salary would be 'justified were he to take charge' of the Health Service Executive in conjunction with his existing role, Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen says. “Following earlier notification at end June 2022, I’ve advised staff in the HSE that I will be stepping down as CEO on October 3rd. I’ll then take up a period of annual leave. I’ll truly miss leading the most committed workforce in the country in some of the toughest of times,” Mr Reid said in a post on Twitter on Tuesday.

He also said Mr Watt’s salary would be “justified were he to take charge of both”. Mr Watt confirmed earlier this year he is in receipt of the full €294,920 salary for his job as secretary general of the Department of Health.

The consolidation of power is a bad idea on the face of it. Nothing says robert is doing a good job in his current role, why does he think he could do two jobs at once.

No conflict of interest in this, as one man will be able to control everything. Can't be better to get extremely rich, extremely fast. And no jail at the end.

Oh yes I’m sure no vital pieces of incriminating evidence won’t go missing.

Well id like to know what he is doing about the corrupt hse management and how he is going to deal with the current hse cluster fuck first before offering the job to your friend?

What planet……that’s pure nonsense! He was appointed to one job- how does the TD think you can get him to take on another? Stick to common sense TD! Did he complain in the Dail about Watt’s salary when he was appointed- of course he/she didn’t.

Should his salary not be doubled if he is taking on 2 jobs? The man will be worked to the bone otherwise. Or else, maybe there are people who could take 1 role maybe? 🤔

The Department of Health is a joke.

He should be fired, not promoted.

Embarrassing.

Between himself and Marc McSharry for hurler on the ditch of the decade.

FF man on massive salary says massive salary is ok. Ya thanks for that Barry, we don't think it's ok not that the public's opinion matters to yee.

If ever a Photo Exuded smugness that has to be it. I wonder what CowenBarry thinks about Paul Reid heading off early & taking owed annual leave , he seems 2 have spent the last 6 months at home in Leitrim, obviously Bailing out now his ass protectors have jumped ship

Well Barry your in government paid by the taxpayer do something about it
