Doug Ford’s new health minister stumbled out of the gate. In its hour of greatest need, Ontario’s health care is being run by a minister still learning on the job, and still struggling to articulate a plan going forward. Opinion by reggcohn

Our longed-for summer respite didn’t last long — not for pupils, politics or pandemics.

Newly appointed Health Minister Sylvia Jones is supposed to be resolving problems and reassuring the public, not rattling people by misspeaking in public. A politician who never met a microphone she ever liked, Jones stumbled this month when asked about privatizing health care. The question invites confusion, because people automatically associate it with extra billing and two-tier systems that are banned by the Canada Health Act — and Jones failed to draw that distinction.

We shall see whether the minister can recover from her faux pas. She is expected to offer more ideas in the coming days for a system that is clearly stretched by the accumulated weight of COVID-19 stresses, fiscal strains, staff shortages, patient surges and deferred surgeries. What’s less encouraging is the aftermath: Only 7.5 million Ontarians have received the recommended third dose to keep their immunity up to date, which works out to just half of the entire population.

At least part of the recent reticence isn’t caused by vaccine hesitance so much as the mixed signals in the media. Some Ontarians may be waiting for a newer iteration of the vaccination now under development , a so-called bivalent vaccine that combines the original formula with an updated version that targets the more transmissible Omicron subvariants.

reggcohn The Ford Government is a CLOWN SHOW ....FORD IS THE HEAD CLOWN 🤡

reggcohn Perhaps if she ate more bees?

reggcohn They all stumbled through the last four years. Only Freeland holding Ford’s have saved him and Ontario.

reggcohn There always needs to be a scapegoat. Deniability is key for a government that doesn't want any accountability.

reggcohn Thanks for making excuses for her

reggcohn It's not a mistake, it's purposeful and the 'journalists' at the Star carry the water for them.

reggcohn No she and Ford went golfing at a $1000 per ticket fundraiser at a donor golf course with corporate elites who hid in the shadows once caught….There fixed it….

reggcohn Martin Regg-Cohn admitting he got played like the sucker he is during the election campaign.

reggcohn Give her a chance You , the MSM , have been struggling for a long time to perform as real objective journalists

reggcohn 'In its hour of greatest need, Ontario’s health care is being run by a minister still learning on the job, and still struggling to articulate a plan going forward.' Or a nasty piece of work who knows exactly what she's about to rip asunder?
