The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has confirmed 15 new cases of monkeypox in nine states and the federal capital territory. The NCDC says that 60 new suspected cases were reported in the first week of this month.

Monkeypox is generally a mild disease that passes without the need for intensive treatment. But for Harun Tulunay, an unusually severe case left him hospitalised.

Tulunay, 35, a sexual health advocate who is HIV positive, said he was given a series of misdiagnoses ranging from tonsillitis to a problem with his HIV medication. It was only after his symptoms became so severe that he began to have trouble swallowing that he was admitted to hospital.
