The outage, paired with executives’ reluctance to answer staff questions while awaiting government direction, meant many employees were left to wonder what was going on. By Nov. 1, minutes of another high-level meeting with representation from provincial government, NLCHI and the four health authorities said public attention was ramping up on the issue, and, “Confidentiality was emphasized.”

Eastern Health employees later learned their private information was breached, including but not limited to their names, addresses, contact information, social insurance numbers, timesheets and disciplinary information dating back 28 years. “One of the patients who is waiting for a biopsy called the line number provided and was told to get a letter from the oncologist and go to the ER and biopsy … will be arranged through ER. The patient called us afterwards and our patient navigator explained to the patient that this is not appropriate,” he wrote.
