The Ford government announced Wednesday that French characters, such as those with accents, will be permitted on Ontario health cards.

But for francophones, it’s an important gesture that strikes at the heart of their identity.

The Progressive Conservative government says residents can now have the correct French spelling of their names on the most commonly used ID cards. In 2020, the province started allowing driver’s licences and Ontario photo cards to have French language characters. Including the language characters is helping correct a frustrating reality for people with names that have accents but who haven’t seen their real names printed on those critical provincial documents.

“As a francophone community, yes we’re a minority, but we want to be seen and at least have our names written properly,” Boutiyeb said.
