In the middle of all that, the UCP paid chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw a bonus of $229,911. It raisedShe seems to be the highest paid public health officer in Canada. Hinshaw made nearly three times the premier’s pay, and more than Dr. Verna Yiu, who ran Alberta Health ServicesPublic health officers in other provinces earned roughly the same base pay as Hinshaw. As a group, they are very well compensated. But they didn’t get bonuses for work on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Not many of us would refuse a huge bonus if somebody offered. I’ve often praised Hinshaw’s leadership in a hard time, especially during the deadly early phase of the pandemic. The other justification is that the bonus raised her to the compensation level of some top medical specialists. Alberta’s CMOH works right in the political wheelhouse, subordinate to a deputy minister who in turn answers to a senior member of cabinet.
