Australian health authorities are now overturning the decades-long ban on blood donors who lived in the UK between 1980 and 1996, after the prohibition was introduced in 2000 to stop the spread of mad cow disease.The now eight-year-old Etienne had to rely on 58 blood transfusions while he spent 138 days in hospital after he was born in July 2014.

"We have always been unable to give blood. is obviously something we want to support," she tells AAP.The mother of the "always happy" Etienne laments never being able to meet or know the people who helped save her son's life.
