Members of an expert committee that met on Thursday to discuss the potential recommendation were split on the decision, with nine members against and six in favour of the declaration, prompting Tedros himself to break the deadlock, he told reporters. Raj Panjabi, director of the White House pandemic preparedness office, said a “co-ordinated, international response is essential” to stop the spread of the disease and protect communities at the greatest risk of contracting it.
Health experts welcomed the WHO’s decision to issue the PHEIC declaration, which until now had only been applied to the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing efforts to eradicate polio.
