The devastating foot and mouth disease, which threatens to decimate Australia’s livestock industry, has been detected in goods coming into Australia from both Indonesia and China.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt revealed on Wednesday that viral fragments of foot and mouth disease had been detected in a beef product at an Australian airport, brought by a passenger from Indonesia. “These sanitation mats will be a physical reminder to passengers to do the right thing to limit any spread of FMD, and will be used in conjunction with our current measures, such as passenger declaration, 100 per cent profiling of all passengers entering from Indonesia, real-time risk assessments, questioning and shoe cleaning,” he said.

Mahar said the government must continue to ramp up biosecurity measures to detect the disease in line with the escalating risks.Mahar said the government should urgently implement any new technology measures that could help trace and detect the virus, and allocate extra funding to ensure every returning Bali passenger was screened by a biosecurity officer at airports.

micksfoley Ban immediately all flights from bali entering Australia. ban immediately all flights from Indonesia from entering Australia. For the safety and protection of Australia 🇦🇺

micksfoley Stop all fights and ships from Indonesia including Bali for a month to further assist the situation. The risk is far, far too high to not take that precaution.

micksfoley Well done Australia authorities for finding and eradicating these fragments.

micksfoley How long have we known about this outbreak in Indonesia? If over a 6 month then somebody’s gotta be held accountable and somebody’s got a lose their job and/or go to jail

micksfoley COVID isn’t just a ‘sniffle’. Wake up people.

micksfoley Just to be clear. They stopped children going to school for a sniffle for 2 years but allow flights in and out of a country that has active foot and mouth disease outbreak. Strawberry growers had to dump ALL their strawberries for a couple of needles... Cmon people, wake up.

Foot and mouth disease: Farmers warn new camping laws present biosecurity riskThe Victorian Farmers Federation is calling for the immediate suspension of laws that provide expanded camping access on waterfront sites used for farming. About fkn time, close the border or have measures in place BEFORE they get on the plane Public lake side and most water front became private land and a lot of campers and fishermen could not access, what’s more they want, they want to own all the lakes and water fronts in Vic. Recreational fishermen and shooters have had access to riverbanks since Victoria constituted. The nonsense over camping simply means the creation of a curfew at 12 midnight to avoid entering the next day. Day and night light use of the banks always constitutionally protected.
