Retired Blackburn police officer diagnosed with extremely rare form of cancer

A retired police officer is sharing the story of his cancer diagnosis, after his tumour shrunk to the size of raisin following a clinical trial.

"It was a good place to work and I've got plenty of stories - one including having Gordon Brown give me a tour of Downing Street after having a lot to drink the night before!" "They obviously wanted to find the cause and that's when they found the tumour on one of the major veins to my groin area. It's a very rare cancer but I have an even rarer form of the rare cancer as it affects my blood stream - I've actually got more chance of winning the Euro Millions statistically.

Kevin was initially treated with standard chemotherapy for nine months and his tumour shrank, however, a routine scan six months later found that it had started to grow again. He was then given the devastating news that there was no agreed second course of treatment for the very rare form of his cancer Kevin has.

"For me, the four-hour drive to get there was worth it, because I knew I was getting treatment from top-class doctors and I knew my way around there and the travelling was a small price to pay. I had to visit every other Friday and I'd be given a pump to take home which would last 48 hours and I'd have two to three days of side effects, which was mainly chronic constipation and then diarrhea.

The trial involved regular scans and appointments for chemotherapy treatments which eventually revealed Kevin's tumour had shrunk by 88% from the size of a walnut to the size of a raisin. He said: "I am really glad I didn't go to a hospital in Spain when I had the swelling in Lanzarote and I'm glad I didn't say no to The Christie's when they asked about the trial, I dread to think where I'd be now.
