Health Canada will provide all ground meats with an exemption from its front-of-package nutrition warning labels after receiving pressure from farmers and industry earlier this month.
Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, along with Agriculture and Agri-Food parliamentary secretary Francis Drouin, made the announcement on Thursday, stating that policy for the labels had been finalized and food manufacturers must phase in the labels before Jan. 1, 2026. The labels, part of the Liberals’ Healthy Eating Strategy first proposed in 2015, will apply to foods high in saturated fat, sugars and sodium, but certain products are exempted from the stickers.
