Health reform: Lack of nuance threatens good progress

This was said by Brian Currin, executive director of Concentric Alliance, during his opening remarks at the launch of the reportMere hours later, social media and the press were awash with headlines like: “Contentious section of NHI bill signals the death of some medical aids”, “Government itself is worried that South Africa’s NHI will be corrupt” and “The end of private medical aids?”.

It also made important recommendations for collaborative working between the government, the private sector and civil society on health reform and consensus-building between stakeholders. Dr Ayanda Ntsaluba, group executive director of Discovery Limited, stated that there was “an acknowledgement that the problems and the challenges we face are bigger than any of the sectors working in isolation”.“there has been quite a lot of distrust over the years and it’s not by any means done away with”.

This is not to say that there are not very real issues that our health system faces. Less than a month ago, the public letter by Dr Tim de Maayer exposed the desperation of health practitioners, the insufficient resources they have and the risk to users of the public sector. The populist or reactionary rhetoric that exists on health system reform does little to enhance public engagement. Rather, it erodes public trust in institutions and creates fear and uncertainty. It also distracts from the real progress we are making, the real issues that must be tackled and the real problems we face in South Africa.
