In 2020, Michelle Scott’s teenage daughter Yasmin started to lose weight. Within months, the family found their previously bright, happy girl battling at mealtimes and when eating at restaurants.

“There are already quite strong barriers to coming forward to find treatment,” said Dr Sian McLean, president of the Australia & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders and a lecturer at La Trobe University. “So when someone ends up seeing someone without the right skills to provide their treatment, you can imagine how hard it is to front up again and keep seeking help.”

A “useless” dietitian referral ended with Yasmin being told to increase her calorie intake. When Yasmin was eventually admitted to hospital, her resting heart rate had dropped to a dangerously slow 23 beats per minute.“Even if we had been able to speak to someone on Telehealth remotely, who could assess her, it would have saved us a whole lot of heartache and stress,” her mother said.

TAFE student Kristen Roustas first asked for help in 2019. Her GP referred her to a psychologist for depression treatment, viewing her concerns about her eating patterns as if they were a “sub-note”, Roustas said.
