Customers are being prescribed vapes by online-only doctors in minutes, in a practice shunned by medical bodies amid concerns two-thirds of vaping is recreational | marywardy

Nicotine vape sellers are facilitating prescriptions for customers who never step foot in a doctor’s office or pharmacy, in what medical bodies say is a blind spot in regulations designed to restrict products to smokers trying to quit.

“If these nicotine products are a prescription medication, they should be prescribed in the context of a patient’s healthcare and overall health; and that is not achieved through a web form or a five-minute phone call.” “Only one in three people who used e-cigarettes reported that they use them to help quit smoking, so most people are using them recreationally.”Prescription Vape, an Australian pharmacy group, also offers prescriptions and vaping products.

Major pharmacy chain Chemist Warehouse refers customers seeking to purchase vapes to the online service Instant Switch, whose prescribers are listed. Bonning said the association didn’t consider vaping to be a good cessation aid. The college of GPs considers vaping a “second or third” option for people trying to quit, Willett said.

marywardy RACGP (over-cautious) and research council are wrong; neither care about the evidence from the UK, (68% smokers stop with vaping and professional help), they think they know better. If they'd been more interested in stopping cigs over the decades, we wouldn't be where we are now.

marywardy About all the average GP can do these days is hit the prescribe' key for an instant script... nicotine scripts are complex and not churned out of our software. So, most GP's don't want to know about it, nor even the smoker that has tried everything.

marywardy All current legislation has achieved is making the safer alternative to smoking more difficult to access for addicts, which is an absolute travesty. The other main outcome has been to drive a thriving black market of questionable quality vapes which children can easily access.

marywardy What percentage of coffee consumption is recreational?

marywardy

marywardy Like smoking all vaping is recreational. That’s why most countries allow vaping products as consumer goods like cigarettes. There is a reason that no other developed country requires a smoker to go to their doctor in order to access vastly safer nicotine vaping products.

marywardy So what? It's almost harmless.

marywardy 'in the interests of public health it is important to promote the use of e-cigarettes...as widely as possible as a substitute for smoking' - RCP founded 1518, set first standard in classification of diseases & first to alert public to dangers of smoking.

marywardy 'two-thirds of vaping is recreational' If it had not been for recreational nicotine vaping I'd still smoke cigarettes. Having realised I'd die a smoker, I heard about vapes and tried 'em purely as a possible occasional substitute when I could not afford ciggies. Liked it ⬆️!

marywardy The Australian Government rolls out the prescription for nicotine model when EVERYTHING is locked down. You have to complain when it goes online. How many Drs saw their patients via zoom for colds, flu, and other aches and pains during lockdowns? Where are these complaints?

marywardy AlexWodak the medical doctor 😂 probably prescribes them by the thousand. A great promoter of vaping and ecigarettes is AlexWodak

marywardy Hi marywardy. Just wondering why comments appear to be turned off on the article?
