Medical researchers are calling for an overhaul of the national funding model for medical research in the wake of the pandemic, saying the system of competitive grants hobbled crucial collaboration in the sector.
“They had the imprimatur of the chief medical officer who basically said: ‘We will do this clinical trial and all of you will participate’. That was far more effective than what we did, which was put people in competition with each other,” Lewin says. “Everything got accelerated and the limitations — bureaucracy, finding the right expertise — suddenly disappeared,” Professor Short says.
Australia had at its disposal an army of highly trained, deep subject matter experts with strong international networks that could be leveraged to source the latest information. This led to several internationally recognised contributions to the race to beat the pandemic.
