The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in poorer mental health amongst young adults, according to research carried out by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). Findings show 55% of women and 40% of men aged 22 were classified as depressed. | More:

These are higher figures when compared with two years previously when 22% of men and 31% of women were depressed.

The ESRI report said that the scale of mental health difficulties among young adults, particularly young women, is of significant concern. However, around half did not have access to adequate broadband and a quiet place to study, and less than one third received regular feedback on their work. Receiving the Pandemic Unemployment Payment served to shelter these young adults from financial strain following employment loss.

Some unhealthy behaviours, such as alcohol consumption, declined for a large group of young adults but other behaviours, such as eating junk foods or sweets, increased for many.

I think this has affected us all without us noticing. Just getting on with it. I know that was me until recently. and then the Black Dog reared its ugly head

Women in particular are suffering it seems, let's look after ourselves a bit more

Get ta f*ck with that disingenuous claptrap. YOU, our national broadcaster, have been largely responsible for poorer mental health amongst young adults with your relentless misery narrative. Have a bit of cop on and own up to your culpability.

I thought they already have mental issues on how they behave as criminals, scumbags, etc, etc

So why are medical professionals being so flippant in suggesting we should mask the entire population again under threat of fines, arrest and imprisonment? They don't think that psychologically it hurts people to be saying we have to go back to restrictions?

The headline should read lockdown and isolation resulted in poorer mental health amongst adults.

Lockdowns caused mental health issues amongst not just the young

Social Isolation and solitude are things I'm an old hand at dealing with but not everyone is capable of coping, especially if they were encountering it for the first time. It's particularly tough for teens and for those who started college during Covid.

Not just young adults. As a primary school teacher I witnessed firsthand how demoralising the social distancing, masks etc. was for young kids. They lost their vibrancy & enthusiasm. Shame on all of you for silencing our concerns at the time!..🤬

Those nphet behavioural psychologists should stand trial for crime’s against humanity

The government imposed unscientific lockdowns did that not the virus.

You mean the lockdown in response to the Covid-19 pandemic...Resulted in poorer mental health...

Err, it wasn't the Pandemic. It was GOVERNMENTS! (And Media outlets in cooperation) Politicians, government agencies and media need to held accountable for raising the mental health issues of this country damning it for generations. Depression epidemic makes money for Pharma too.

I would say it’s the other way around, the mass psychosis of 2020-22 was caused by widespread mental health problems.

Did you need to do the research really it rains most days in this country and RTE pumps out Garbage 7-5 days a week.. Along Social outlay to have fun other pub nil, I mean 2008 gave us the walking brigade. Non they rip all roads for cycling.

Yes... that was the point. In other news: water remains wet.

Sure if they can speak Irish to one another they will fine ... They can then learn Latin.. Followed walking up stony mountains bear foot to appreciate what they have first, before we torture them with HSE waiting list, followed by questionnaires about what they ate to get SWF

we’ve all collectively pushed the pandemic to the back of our minds like hiding from a traumatic event. as a society we all need to speak about what we went through, that was a tough tough couple years for everyone
