Social media and WhatsApp networks of doctors expressed shock, dismay and anger at the news that doctor who exposed the shocking state of children's healthcare at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital had been suspended.

from fellow doctors and the public for De Maayer’s willingness to speak out. Even the Presidency is believed to have asked the Gauteng Department of Health and the hospital for an explanation.“This article is a cry from the heart.

“Knowing the risk of victimisation for speaking out, careful consideration and discussion with peers accompanied the decision to publish. In response to a request to confirm that he had been suspended and whether the MEC for Health, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi, had known about it or authorised it, Kwara Kekana, the spokesperson for the Health MEC, said she would “check with the facility”.

Indeed, in a discussion this writer had with Premier David Makhura last week during the launch of Gauteng’s anti-corruption report, the premier said he had read De Maayer’s letter and had told officials the provincial government needed to address the issues he raised, rather than attack the messenger. It is believed that the GDoH is at an advanced stage in negotiating a new Memorandum of Agreement with Wits University concerning their respective roles in the Gauteng health system.

Wow how shocking !

I been waiting 10 year for hernia operation. Had to lend money to go private. It got so big i could have died or disabled for life. Health department is a joke. They don't care. If i had the money for lawyer i would sue. Health department is pathetic

To say its shoking is an understatement, its horrible.

It's tipical governments can do as they like and the people must be silent

So let us the citizens overturn the suspension. How can we let our voices be heard regarding this matter?

'intimidation or victimisation of professionals and workers who speak out where things are going wrong.'

ANC is not even ashamed, doctors dedicate their time and energy in saving lives in dire working conditions that the incompetent anc cadres subjected our public hospitals into,Dr Maayer must be reinstated.

How can they do that? He is fighting for the lives of his patients which are children.

Because he told the Truth. Sickening

SandileMadonse I hope he sues the Dept of Health for unfair dismissal.

Unfortunately criticism is punished by our government (local or otherwise). Which is the reason why there will never be improvements. The Doc should be considered a hero!! I suppose another emigration loading……

I'm desperate for any employment. I'm willing to be a slave boy or a servant too. Just for my kids🙏. My children are suffering because I struggle to put food on the table for them😭. Last night they slept hungry and that broke me as a father💔.
