U.S. researchers say faulty readings by a pulse oximeter led to many patients who identified as Black or Hispanic not having timely recognition of how sick they really were.

patients has failed to work properly for people of colour, causing delays in urgently needed care, a new study found.

“The study illuminates just how systemic racism and systemic discrimination inserts itself into every aspect of health-care delivery,” said Dr. Andrew Boozary, executive director of the Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine at the University Health Network. The results found that of 7,126 patients, Black patients were 29 per cent less likely than white patients to have their need for treatment recognized by the oxygen reader. For people the study classified as non-Black Hispanic patients, they were 23 per cent less likely than white patients to have their treatment needs identified.

When applying these study results to the U.S. population at large with COVID-19, it’s likely the pulse oximeter bias has “caused a higher proportion of racial and ethnic minorities to be inadvertently undertreated or even mis-triaged,” said Wu. There are fewer racialized individuals who are part of medical studies to test devices and that creates “serious doubt” as to whether technology is effective for everyone, said Boozary.

'racist oxygen monitor'

Le mien est noir … Et reconnaît toutes les couleurs de peau. C’est du n’importe quoi !!

COVID: 'Fully vaccinated' should be redefined, experts say | CTV News (You never stop taking injections!! How is that different from a junkie or VAIDS! Two years unvaxxed & I've only had a runny nose! why should I be afraid for my life?)

Ah yes. The machine is racist.

Why does it matter if they’re poc? Why would faulty readings only effect them? I don’t get where the racism is here ?

I wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve seen hospitals always giving priority to White Canadians.

Wow. What has become of journalism !

LOL!!!! Toronto Star... Whenever I am in the mood for a laugh, you always come through. Better than National Enquirer

This is shameful.

Click bait… outrage porn. The Star used to be a legitimate newspaper… what happened?

That’s because, like all far-left academics, the authors of this study don’t control all variables and simply assume that any discrepancy between the races is proof of racial bias.

Everything’s racist 🤦‍♀️

Bla bla bla bla bla

It’s always been considered stupid to rely on only one parameter to assess how sick someone is, even if your oxygen saturation level is normal, health care professionals should assess the whole patient including the work of breathing required to maintain that Saturation.

machines are racist, technology is racist, momnkeypox is racist as well...stay home.

You all knew it was coming. No matter what we do to prevent any racial bias, we will always be Blamed for racial bias Real or not.. there will always be a study that aligns with someone else bias

Black and Hispanic? So darker Asian skin had no problems? Funny how everything in the world only disproportionately effects blacks and Hispanics, even oxygen monitors 🤷‍♂️

The oxygen detector is racist it sees a black person and stops working. It has nothing to do with the fact that light for detection passes through dark skin worse than lighter skin. The device is racist. /s Imagine being this braindead. Please go read a book

Saying the quiet part out loud now with different words. Interesting.

I wouldn't call this racism. It's a limitation of the device due to darker skin pigmentation Anyone that uses this device knows about this in the hospital setting...if you have doubts about the reading you adjust to another part or you can do a blood test to get an accurate value

Oh come on

Among people who 'identified' as Black & Hispanic?

Really interesting how many open racists just jumped at the chance to comment on this tweet. Like they just needed the world to see they were not only too ignorant to understand what the article is about, but also too ignorant to keep their bigotry to themselves.

Bullshit

Faulty readings also made the world think there was a pandemic Black people, all people really, should realize the Star & their ilk are full o' shit! Like my man Chuck D used to say 'Don't,D-D-D-Dont't Believe the Hype'!!

Toronto star sucks at mind control. 💀💀💀😆😆😆 thegoyimknow

LMAO

This is the first explanation I've heard of why race would have anything to do with higher death rates from COVID. Revealing.

Gee, Star. Are you going to say that medical devices are racist now. What next? Our income tax system is racist now?

Is the racism of this device “systemic?”

Woke left mental cases claiming medical devices are racist. 🤣🤣🤣
