The bacterium can contaminate hot water tanks, shower heads and hot tubs.

While there are an estimated 10,000 cases of Legionnaires' disease in the U.S. every year, outbreaks only occur"sporadically" and are investigated to identify the source, which is often a large building's complex water system, says the CDC.

Individuals who recently stayed at the Grand Islander and developed similar symptoms are encouraged to seek medical attention and report the illness to DOH’s Disease Outbreak and Control Division Disease Reporting Line at 808-586-4586.
