There are a pile of reasons to scoop, bury, or compost pet waste. Here are just a few.

of aerosolized bacteria in the winter months in Cleveland [and] Detroit.”

The turds also pump phosphorous and nitrogen into the ecosystem. Two of the main components of fertilizer, these nutrients aren’t harmful in and of themselves—but in large-enough quantities, they spur algae blooms that lower underwater oxygen levels, kill aquatic life, and make swimming unsafe. On land, meanwhile, the feces can decrease biodiversity by promoting the growth of certain common plants, which then block smaller, rarer flora from receiving sunlight.

“Dogs are fed protein-rich diets at home,” says De Frenne, lead author of the paper. “That is a key difference from wild animals.” Moreover, wild animals “simply recycle nutrients that are already present in the ecosystem” De Frenne explains, whereas domestic ones “import nutrients.” It’s not that dogs are uniquely noxious. Greg Okin, a professor at UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, points out that “cat feces is much, much more dangerous,” and that “a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s.”

How is this Science?

I always pick up after my dog, but you're telling me the planet wants me to waste two to three plastic bags per day because the grass isn't happy? Nah, i'm good.

I tried composting dog poop. It doesnt break down and decompose like all other organic material. It does generate sewer smell in a compost pile

What impact does the plastic bag I use to pick it up have on the environment?

What’s the point behind spending your life carrying s h i t?!

Fax you! Stop bullshiting us and tell the truth about who need to stop doing what

What about my wild squirrels and rabbits and opossums and lizards and snakes and occasional foxes or coyotes....Birds....okay you get the point I think

You sure? Flies love it.

'smell, smell'... 'smells like dog sh*t.' 'taste, taste'... 'taste like dog sh*t', 'good thing we didn't step in it!'

Not saying one should not pick up after their dog, but who picks up all the wild animal poops? There's a lot of it out there.

Here is the biggest reason - rain washes into sewer then into lake. Huge amount of feces if you don't pick up your animals waste. Beaches then are closed due to e coli outbreaks. Second biggest reason - people don't like shit on their shoes.

Ummm Dogs can’t read.

This sounds like a pile of shit (pun intended) that will only contribute to animal cruelty, make a shelters job to adopt pets that much harder, and increase euthanasia rates. These phDs realize, that picked up 💩 doesn’t just disappear, right? It’s at your landfill.
