Yes graduate students are treated poorly. Post docs are as well. Its all a pyramid scheme that I and many unfortunately have to play before getting a real job (likely in industry where they pay real salaries)
My local city college pays 30-35k stipend for a PhD in STEM. I thought MIT paid at least double that.
