UPDATED: First U.S. case of monkeypox a man who travelled to Canada; 17 cases suspected in Montreal

Dr. Mylene Drouin, the city’s public health director, told reporters today the cases have not yet been confirmed by a laboratory, but she says recent outbreaks in Europe and a case reported in the United States suggest they are likely cases of the virus.

The 17 suspected cases in the Montreal area come after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said on Wednesday it had confirmed a single case of monkeypox virus infection in a man who had recently traveled to Canada. He is now confined to an airborne infection isolation room at Massachusetts General Hospital, said Dr. Paul Biddinger duringThe Massachusetts public health laboratory tested the man on Tuesday, on Wednesday the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case through its own testing, and the man was hospitalized on Thursday.

Canadian health officials said no cases of monkeypox have been reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada.
