Opinion: Give CARE Court idea a real chance to work for homeless Californians [Opinion]

” : The groups that trashed the CARE Court plan have been allowed for far too long to derail needed legislative and humane solutions to get our sickest with serious brain diseases off our streets and into lifesaving medical treatment.

They prefer to see people who cannot recognize their illnesses and have lost their decision-making capacity “die with their rights on” in misery. It’s time to stop these groups, who are not medical doctors and have no understanding of complex brain illnesses and psychosis, from dictating to doctors when and if a very sick person can receive medical treatment.

Compassionate lifesaving care is not an ideological construct — it is a medical necessity in cases where people are unable to make treatment decisions for themselves. It’s past time to move in a different direction, think outside the box and help our fellow human beings who cannot help themselves. CARE Court deserves a chance.
