“It was a bit of a shock to get alright, I can tell you.”

When Limerick woman Rosaline O’Brien went for a routine breast check after turning 50, she didn’t expect the doctor to find anything amiss.

The mum of three, who is a nurse at University Hospital Limerick, initially had surgery on her breast. Then a doctor spoke to her about the possibility of her being put on a clinical trial. She stressed the importance of clinical trials, which are especially close to her heart as her husband Brendan died from cancer in 2004.

“My children were aware of what was going on. It was tough on them but I told them everything, there was no point in hiding it. I got through it OK, there were good days and bad days.
