R2 billion allocated for medical interns

Health Minister Joe Phaahla announced the funds on Tuesday as he tabled his policy and budget vote, focusing on health priorities including the management of the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Health Insurance and the response to the burden of communicable diseases.

All provinces have experienced challenges in the current financial year as the allocated amount for Covid-19 has been reduced. Phaahla said that in the current financial year, provinces will share the R6.8 billion in direct conditional grants managed by them under the health facilities revitilisation grant to construct and maintain hospitals, clinics and other health facilities.Charlotte Maxeke emergency unit reopened, but no walk-ins allowed

Contracts for the multibillion-rand Limpopo Academic Hospital are also expected to be issued this year.
