Several children worldwide have died after developing multi-system inflammatory syndrome, despite the overall risk of death or severe disease from COVID-19 remaining low for that age group. But while the nation has had dozens of confirmed and hospitalised cases, no Australian children have so far died after developing the condition.
The scientists found distinct differences between the blood samples in the two groups. Researchers identified that 85 proteins were specific to multi-system inflammatory syndrome and 52 proteins were associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Both syndromes were major indicators of severe COVID-19.
“Knowing the mechanisms associated with severe COVID-19 in children and how the blood clotting and immune systems in children react to the virus will help diagnose and detect acute COVID-19 cases and allow us to develop targeted treatment.”
