How your pet dog is wreaking ecological damage and what you can do about it

IT WAS shocking,” says biologist Galo Zapata-Ríos, recalling what he saw when he viewed footage from his camera traps. Placed in the Andes, across 2000 square kilometres of forests, grasses and shrublands in Ecuador, these were intended to capture the movements of striped hog-nosed skunks, mountain coatis and other wildlife. Instead, in frame after frame, he saw something he hadn’t anticipated: dogs.

It isn’t just the Andes: dogs are everywhere. They live on every continent except Antarctica, and inhabit high mountains, tropical rainforests, islands and nature reserves that would otherwise be considered pristine. One, making them the most common carnivore on Earth. That was in 2013 and there are surely more today. India alone has seen an estimated increase of 20 million – to around 80 million – partly because of legislation passed in 2001 forbidding the relocation or killing of street dogs.

Hold the leash and say no. This isn’t hard.

Bunk - don’t act like wild dogs are roaming around the Canadian, Irish, American, and United Kingdom’s countryside at the same rate as they are in countries throughout South America and Asia.

Eat him and save the earth

My eyes rolled audibly I'm fairly certain.

😡

In the past 200 years human populations increased by 8X. With them came 8X dogs. People produce 2.5 lbs greenhouse gasses daily Dogs 10.3 lbs greenhouse gasses daily Add cows for milk and meat at 23.6 lbs daily and autos are dwarfed by comparison. Turn deserts green or else.

Dogs aren't just 'wreaking ecological damage' but they are responsible for global warming. Dogs produce over 10 pounds of greenhouses gasses daily more than 4 times a human accounting for all the additional carbon dioxide in the past 200 years.😡

yupper scupper, dogs layin' waste is dem problem a'ight

Absolute garbage, Gravy tells squirrels to go fuck themselves, chases rabbits, and is always on the hunt. Because that is her nature.

First they came for the cats, and I said nothing for I was not a cat person.

I hold her leash and say no when she tries to hunt a bird or squirrel outside. Simple enough.

They were influenced and domesticated in the image of people.

Don't blame the pet, it's destructive to the poor pet who never asked to become the pet.

Do you wanna talk about all the extinct species when domesticated cats came to America? Leave mans best friend alone.

'New scientist' like the 'experts'. clowns

StopPaywalling articles! Does the article even mention environmental impacts of current pet foods? Magazines are talking about insects as food for humans but seem to mostly ignore pet food.

This site is definitely ran by cats

bigotry

...and he smokes menthols!

This is where the far left says to dog owners…….”ya gonna have to strangle Fido to death, it’s to protect the environment and stop climate change”

More likely to be feral cats destroying native animals, especially over here in Australia.

What fuckery is this? Leave the dogs alone

Dogs are a menace to the environment, they shit all over the place and exhale lots of CO2. Not to mention the energy that's needed to produce dog food.

I pick up every piece of litter down to the smallest bit of plastic that I see when I walk my dog, in city parks, along river shores and on the beach. If I didn't have a dog, my behaviour would be radically different. I honestly think my dog is a net ecological benefit.
