Health Canada has cleared an antibody-based therapy — Evusheld — for use in those unlikely to mount an adequate immune response to COVID-19 vaccination, or for whom COVID-19 vaccination is not recommended.

AstraZeneca, government previously struck deal for initial 100,000 doses to be delivered in 2022A box of Evusheld, a drug for antibody therapy developed by pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca for the prevention of COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients, is shown in Sweden. Canadian regulators followed American and European counterparts on Thursday by approving the treatment.

The therapy has already been authorized in the United States and its use has also been recommended by the European Medicines Agency.Evusheld was tested against the BA.1, BA.1.1 and BA.2 subvariants of OmicronData from the study showed the therapy reduced the amount of virus detected in samples, the viral load, of all tested Omicron subvariants in mice lungs, AstraZeneca said. It was also shown in the study to limit inflammation in the lungs, a critical symptom in severe COVID-19 infections.

The MHRA said that the treatment should not be administered to people infected with the COVID-causing SARS-CoV-2 virus, or those who have had recent exposure to someone with the virus.
