With the BA.2 subvariant now believed to be the dominant COVID-19 strain in L.A. County, local public health officials are also seeing an uptick in school outbreaks.

on K-12 campuses, the county’s public health director said Thursday, April 7.

BA.2 — an offshoot of the omicron variant that fueled the winter surge in cases — accounted for 47% of all infections in the county that underwent specialized testing to identify virus strains, according to Ferrer. But she said that percentage was based on cases from two weeks ago, and BA.2 is likely responsible for more than half of the county’s infections now.The prevalence of the BA.

“If cases are going down, test-positivity is down, why would we see more outbreaks? Well, it’s ‘cause some of the other protections that we had in place are no longer there, and we’re going to have to watch that,” she said.
