Leader Andrea Horwath unveiled seven pages of her party’s election platform on Sunday, committing $1.15 billion to a Universal Mental Health Care plan that would allow Ontarians to access psychotherapy services using their OHIP card.
The first step of the plan will be to expand OHIP coverage to include a minimum of six psychotherapy treatments, rising to 12 sessions for patients who need it. This portion will cost taxpayers $500 million. Under the existing OHIP system, mental health services are offered for free in the case of hospital admission or involvement in the criminal justice system.
“Many patients would benefit from talk therapy, whereas psychiatrists typically focus on medical approaches. There are nurses, social workers, and community health workers providing free or low-cost therapy at ‘community-based’ mental health organizations. However, even these organizations have wait lists.”

I see my psychiatrist whenever I need to and get free monthly injections although the meds are paid for by the drug maker. All I had to do was get involuntarily commited to a secured mental health ward.

OHIP already covers visits to psychologists (who can prescribe medicine), but not to psychotherapists (who can't).

Research and ongoing treatment usage in other countries demonstrates 10 visits is the optimum, not 6, so just make it 10. Stop making people jump thru friggin’ hoops to get the care they need. As well, therapists need to work a variety of hours to meet the work hours of patients!
I’m confused AndreaHorwath, we have universal mental health care. Long before covid, the waits were a year for a psych referral. As our HC system is in shambles, who do you suggest is providing this care?
